چکیده

In double naming tasks requiring the production of consecutive spoken and written responses to the same picture, subject ECA produced inconsistent lexical responses in the say-then-write (stimulus: organ; spoken response: “church;” written response: piano) but not in the write-then-say condition (organ ® piano ® “piano”). This observation, together with the fact that ECA had damage to the semantic system and to sublexical phoneme-grapheme conversion but not to sublexical grapheme-phoneme conversion procedures, is used to constrain claims about the organisation of lexical form knowledge. It is proposed that phonological and orthographic lexical forms are accessed autonomously, but interact via sublexical conversion procedures. In ECA, the one-way interaction between phonological and orthographic word forms is prevented by damage to phonemegrapheme procedures (hence, inconsistent responses in the say-then-write naming condition); the reverse interaction can take place because grapheme-phoneme conversion processes are spared (hence, the absence of inconsistent responses in the write-then-say naming condition).

Phonological Codes Constrain Output of Orthographic Codes via Sublexical and Lexical Routes in Chinese Written Production

To what extent do phonological codes constrain orthographic output in handwritten production? We investigated how phonological codes constrain the selection of orthographic codes via sublexical and lexical routes in Chinese written production. Participants wrote down picture names in a picture-naming task in Experiment 1or response words in a symbol-word associative writing task in Experiment 2...

Lexical and sublexical orthographic processing: an ERP study with skilled and dyslexic adult readers.

This ERP study investigated the cognitive nature of the P1-N1 components during orthographic processing. We used an implicit reading task with various types of stimuli involving different amounts of sublexical or lexical orthographic processing (words, pseudohomophones, pseudowords, nonwords, and symbols), and tested average and dyslexic readers. An orthographic regularity effect (pseudowords-n...

Running Head: PHONOGRAPHIC SUBLEXICAL UNITS Phonographic sublexical units in visual word recognition

Recent models of visual word recognition assume that sublexical orthographic-phonological information is organized according to an onset-nucleus-coda scheme (Plaut, McClelland, Seidenberg, & Patterson, 1996; Jacobs, Rey, Ziegler, & Grainger, 1998, but see Coltheart, Curtis, Atkins & Haller, 1993 for an alternative view). In this study we test the hypothesis that onsetnucleus-coda subsyllabic co...

Orthographic–phonological links in the lexicon: When lexical and sublexical information conflict

At what level of orthographic representation is phonology linked in the lexicon? Is it at the whole word level, the syllable level, letter level, etc.? This question can be addressed by comparing the two scripts used in Korean, logographic hanja and alphabetic/syllabic hangul, on a task where judgments must be made about the phonology of a visually presented word. Three experiments are reported...

Sublexical frequency measures for orthographic and phonological units in German.

Many recent studies have demonstrated the influence of sublexical frequency measures on language processing, or called for controlling sublexical measures when selecting stimulus material for psycholinguistic studies (Aichert & Ziegler, 2005). The present study discusses which measures should be controlled for in what kind of study, and presents orthographic and phonological syllable, dual unit...
